“Tying knots and selling biscuits? No way! Scouting is so much more than that! I've been a scout since I was 10. My parents thought I'd like it but they actually had no idea just how well it would suit me. We're 15 years on and I'm still a member. When I first walked through those big doors to the club house as a little girl, it was all pretty nerve-racking. I saw older kids already looking as if they were real leaders and showing courage. But that was when I decided I wanted to be just like them when I grew up.

I'm now a scout leader in Esdoorn. I help children develop who they want to be and what they want to do. I think it's important that they can give their own opinion on things, because by showing leadership, you can stand out in the group. And that's when you can show who you really are. They find this out in a playful way. The minute they walk through our doors, they're in a completely different world. My name in that world isn't Anouk, but Marala, a character in The Jungle Book.

Next summer, I'm going to the biggest scout camp in the world in South Korea. We call it the Scout's Olympic Games. In the space of just two weeks, 2000 of us will build a complete village, including a hospital and pubs and clubs. I'm really looking forward to learning about new cultures and widening my view of the world. Scouting is something I want to keep doing for the rest of my life. It's where I've met my friends for life and where I can do what I enjoy doing most. I wear my shirt and scarf with pride and I've got no plans to store them away in the cupboard at all.”
