Green Chemistry

Our innovative 3-year international Green Chemistry programme equips you with the expertise to drive sustainable chemical practices and address global environmental challenges. Developed by industry experts, the programme covers energy-efficient processes, circular processes, and alternative green chemicals for greener industrial practices. You’ll gain hands-on lab experience and explore resource efficiency and sustainability in chemistry. 

Our international programme connects you to green technologies, preparing you for careers in sustainability-focused industries. Plus, the Emmen campus offers a supportive, personal atmosphere, with a dedicated study coach to guide you through your studies. 

Throughout the Green Chemistry track, you will work on hands-on projects in collaboration with industry partners, applying your knowledge to real-world environmental and sustainability challenges. We believe in learning by doing through our Design-Based Education (DBE) approach, ensuring that you graduate with a strong academic foundation, applied research skills, and valuable practical experience. 

From early on in the programme, you will conduct laboratory experiments focusing on sustainable chemical processes and resource-efficient methodologies, such as developing eco-friendly materials or exploring biocatalysis techniques. These projects allow you to investigate circular processes and alternative green chemicals while working closely with instructors and professionals in the field.  

This practical approach refines your problem-solving abilities and equips you with the critical thinking skills necessary to adapt to the dynamic demands of sustainable chemistry. By addressing real-world issues, you’ll gain first-hand experience in creating solutions for a more sustainable future. 

Our partnerships with the Circular Plastics and Water Technology professorships offer you the opportunity to specialise in applied research within the unique innovation ecosystem of the Northern Netherlands. You can focus on the sustainable synthesis, use, and reuse of polymers, as well as advanced water treatment technologies that combine physico-chemical and biological processes.

Studying Green Chemistry at NHL Stenden allows you to develop essential skills in sustainable chemical practices while exploring their global impact. Our participation in RUN-EU means you can join Short Advanced Programmes and carry out projects with partner institutions in Europe. You can also go to one of the NHL Stenden’s Grand Tour locations in South Africa, Bali or Thailand in your third year. Or you can go on an exchange to a partner institution and delve into a totally new way of studying.
