International Leisure, Tourism & Events Management (Master)

With the Master’s in International Leisure, Tourism and Events Management, you develop your insights into the challenges faced by the industry and how these issues can be managed responsibly within the context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Investigating key concepts from academic fields such as sociology, geography and anthropology, you will debate issues and develop viable solutions. Unique to this master's is working with scenario planning, a management tool for identifying trends, the main drivers of change and possible future developments.
- Work for and with the industry on research projects through the European Tourism Futures Institute (ETFI)
- Combine academic and applied research and put theory into practice with design challenges
- Develop essential skills in scenario planning, an essential skill for leisure, tourism and event managers
- Go on educational visits to museums, event venues, sports facilities and tourism destinations
- Choose a specialisation and work on projects with local communities and entrepreneurs, including in Amsterdam, Portugal or Nepal

What the master International Leisure, Tourism & Events Management offers
During this master’s, you gain insight into the challenges faced by the leisure, tourism and events industry today, and how these issues can be managed responsibly. You investigate existing theories and key concepts from a range of academic fields including psychology, sociology, geography, anthropology and economics so as to debate current issues and develop viable solutions. Our educational approach encourages you to think out of the box and develop innovative and creative ideas for the future, working with fellow students, lecturers and stakeholders from the industry. Unique to this master’s, you investigate different possible futures using scenario planning, a management tool which is highly appreciated by the industry. All in all, our programme helps you deepen your academic knowledge and skills and identify new opportunities for your career and for your personal professional development.
International Leisure, Tourism & Events Management in practice
During your studies, you carry out practical assignments from real companies, working in groups and coached by lecturers and professionals with relevant professional experience. It’s a way of learning, an educational concept, we call Design-Based Education. You learn to draw on feedback to adapt your ideas and become more flexible, while also developing your teamwork and leadership skills.
This particular programme also excels in its collaboration with the European Tourism Futures Institute (ETFI), and most of the lecturers on the programme are also researchers at ETFI. This not only gives you access to the latest research proposals and findings, but also means the programme covers scenario planning, an approach to strategy and planning that identifies trends from the perspective of what the uncertainties could be. It looks at the changes the industry faces, the main driving forces and how these affect how the world develops.

By taking an elective minor, you gain the insights and skills in a particular area of leisure, tourism & events so that you can take on a strategic management position in organisations or companies across the globe.
As a master’s student at a university of applied sciences, you work closely with industry and usually carry out research for a particular company or organisation. This means your thesis question covers a current management issue and the findings and conclusions in your final thesis are supported by both academic theory and practical insights.
