The programme
With the Science Specialisation programme, you develop your intercultural understanding and global teaching skills, so you are ready to meet the challenges of a diverse international classroom with empathy and adaptability. The curriculum includes collaboration with Geography students.
Specific subjects include:
the position of different continents in a globalising world using different geographical concepts, perspectives and dimensions
(social) demographic processes
urban and rural processes
the influence of plate tectonics on the geomorphology
basic relations in weather and climate phenomena
the geomorphology of global landscapes
the physical factors affecting human geography of different continents
Using Geo ICT in your lessons (ArcGIS, Storymaps, Google Earth)
Explore essential science concepts including general and organic chemistry, mechanics, optics, waves and sound, physiology, molecular structure, genetics and sustainable energy technology. You’ll also work with Geography students on projects about sustainability and its integration into science education.
Along with developing your didactic skills and deepening your scientific knowledge, you’ll also develop the interdisciplinary skills needed to analyse socio-scientific global challenges, including human health and aging, energy resources, climate change and food availability.
Carry out teaching practice focused on research about differentiation in education followed by an elective semester doing a minor subject at another university. In your final year, you specialise in advanced topics such as ecology, thermodynamics and modern physics, collaborating with Mathematics students on interdisciplinary STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) projects.
Lab work plays a significant role as you’ll prepare and supervise experiments in partnership with school technicians. You'll finish your studies with teaching practice and write a scientific or interdisciplinary article to showcase your expertise.
Practical approach
The programme is designed to provide a balanced mix of theoretical knowledge and practical experiences, so you are thoroughly prepared you for the complexities of teaching in international school settings. You'll undertake practical assignments that focus on application, reflection and skill refinement. You'll develop the confidence and competence needed to thrive in diverse classrooms by engaging in simulated class lessons where you get feedback from peers and instructors, role play, where you get to adapt your approaches to different teaching contexts, and through multifaceted projects that incorporate different skills and tools needed in the international classroom.

Collaborating with Geography students to prepare and deliver a workshop focused on SDGs and active learning strategies
Designing lessons based on a field trip incorporating cultural values and global perspectives
Classroom simulations with peer feedback
Developing educational materials for Wetsus, the European Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Water Technology in Leeuwarden
Conducting research and developing educational designs to resolve a teaching challenge
