Modern offensive cyber: an Eastern European case study

Eastern Europe has long been identified as a home of very capable cyber hackers and entrepreneurial organised crime. In more recent times Russia has built an offensive cyber ecosystem consisting of state intelligence agencies, private corporations and criminal groups.  In this talk we will look at the origins and history of this cyber ecosystem and what its future might be.

Stephen McCombie is professor of Maritime IT Security at NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences. Stephen has specialised in cyber security over the last 25 years and held management roles with a number of organisations including IBM, National Australia Bank, and RSA Security. He has also been an active researcher and academic over that period and is currently a professor at NHL Stenden.  His PhD thesis examined the impact of Eastern European cybercrime groups upon Australia. His research interests include maritime cyber threats, cyber crime, digital forensics, cyber threat intelligence, cyber conflict, cyber espionage and information warfare.
