Rethinking Hospitality (webinar)

Merriam Webster's Dictionary defines hospitality as, “generous and friendly treatment of visitors and guests or hospitable treatment”. It also refers to the industry in which hotels, caterers, and event planners largely operate. In New Zealand, the word Manaakitanga  loosely translates to hospitality. This plays a key role in Māori life, as well as inspiring the New Zealand visitor experience. Manaakitanga is deeply ingrained in New Zealand society and is used to showcase hospitality to travelers and visitors, ensuring they are made to feel welcome when visiting the country. But what is the future of our understanding of the term ‘hospitality’ and what levels of hospitality will we offer in the future?  

Is the future, an industry without hospitality and customer care as commodification and technology plays a greater role in the design of hospitality experiences? Whether it is concept hotels like Citizen M or robots serving your food. In this webinar we rethink the concept of hospitality, whether it is role of food and sharing, hospitality education, sustainability, technology, hospitality and the guest or the latest thinking about the concept. So, imagine a future with or without hospitality or somewhere in between.

    Topic: Rethinking the Role of Hospitality in Society 

    This presentation examines the ‘HOST model’, a transformative framework urging a reevaluation of hospitality's societal role beyond mere economic activity. It advocates for hospitality's potential to foster significant social, economic, and environmental advancements by integrating it more deeply into societal systems.  

  • Associate Professor Alessandro Inversini, EHL Hospitality Business School (Switzerland) 
    Topic: The Rise of Regenerative Hospitality 

    Regenerative hospitality moves from the sustainable development paradigm by positioning travel-related businesses as entities that develop the capacities of places, communities and their guests to operate in harmony with interconnected social-ecological systems. The presentation will discuss the dimensions of regenerative hospitality as an evolving responsible business orientation for hotels.  

  • Dr. Eerang Park, Edith Cowan University (Australia) 
    Topic:  The social practice of food in tourism and hospitality 

    Food consumption and experiences take the form of a social practice. This presentation discusses how food practices in hospitality and tourism are embedded in social relations and can explain the changing interplay of tourists, social structure, and resources. 

  • Associate Professor Hanneke Assen, Hotel Management School Leeuwarden (The Netherlands) 
    Topic: Rethinking Hospitality Education: Lessons Learned and Future Opportunities  

    In 2020, Hotel Management School Leeuwarden introduced an innovative approach to hospitality education: Design Based Hospitality Education (DBHE). Within DBHE, students, educator-researchers, and industry professionals collaborate as partners in learning, engaging in collective learning, researching and designing processes to address challenges within the hospitality industry. Through the presentation, insights into lessons learned and future opportunities are provided.
