Since the Paris Climate Agreement, almost 200 governments and many companies are busy making climate actions plans. We are now more aware of the huge amount of energy and materials we consume. The gap between rich and poor is growing. Therefore, a better balance in our care for people, planet, prosperity, and purpose is needed. Do you want to use your talent and contribute to creating a more sustainable world? Then this minor is just for you!

You will first develop a base knowledge in the area of sustainability, working on assignments on the subject of Energy Transition, Corporate Social Responsibility (MVO in Dutch), and/or Circular Economy (Cradle2Cradle). This is necessary because sustainable development is a complex and multidisciplinary subject. You will also work on developing your Personal Leadership skills. And there is room to work on an issue that holds your own personal interest.

In the second part, you will work in a multidisciplinary team on a project related to a local sustainability issue. Since the minor is open for all studies and international students, you will gather experience in working in a dynamic international setting. You may choose a project from available options or find one in your own network. The province, municipalities, and several local companies will encourage you to come up with innovative ideas and sustainable solutions!

In your personal development plans, you will formulate your own learning goals in line with your disciplinary competency profiles and the RESFIA sustainability competencies (each with 3 levels). RESFIA stands for Responsibility, Emotional intelligence, System orientation, Future orientation, personal Involvement and Action skills.

Learning outcomes are:

  1. You can carry out a problem analysis of a sustainability problem; you are able to give insight in the causes of the problem and its meaning in relation to the larger picture of sustainable development.
  2. You can apply your acquired knowledge of sustainability problems on a specific situation in your own field and develop an innovative solution.
  3. You and your project team can develop potential innovative solutions for a real-life case, based on a problem analysis and a design based education approach.
