“I’m usually the actress but here I’ve taken on the role of director”

After her college course in Acting for Film in Amsterdam, Sarah van Diepen (22) found acting offered very little security, and yet her passion is to continue in the field. She decided to develop her expertise with the associate degree Creative Media Professional. It means she gets to learn about the other side of her work and makes useful connections in the media world.

“As a child, I loved doing musicals and I’ve always wanted to be an actress, so the idea of doing an acting course was formed early. Through the course, I got roles in voice acting doing the voices for children’s series and films. My first job was on Mini Ninja’s for Disney XD and later on I did a Barbie film for Netflix. It was a dream come true as I loved Barbies as a child. I want to always be able to do this work, but it’s just not possible full time. The jobs just aren’t very big. And yet it’s still my passion to grow in film and voice acting. I hope that this programme will give me the chance to get a foot in the door at companies thanks to the contacts I make.”

A different role

“Apart from building my network, I also want to learn more about other aspects of the film world. As a film actor, you often have to do auditions and that can sometimes feel rather like a meat market: who fits the role the best? My plan now is to do my internship in a casting office, so that I can find out what it’s like behind the scenes at auditions and what it’s like for those having to judge the actors.”

“Another useful experience is the audiovisual production we’re now doing. We work in groups and get to decide for ourselves what we want to create. It can be anything, like a promotional video for a company or a documentary. We decided to make a video clip. Usually, I’m the actress, but here I’ve taken on the role of director. And from that perspective, I’m now learning about how directors see their actors.”

A taster of different forms of media

“If you’re not sure which media programme you want to do, then this is a good choice because it’s so broad. You get to look at all kinds of aspects of media. For instance, I never had the ambition to make a magazine, but when we did it in the Publishing semester, it turned out I really enjoyed it. I made a magazine about inspirational women and wrote an article on how healthcare for women in the Netherlands can be improved. Everything you learn in one semester comes together in projects like this. We had workshops on interviewing, there were videos on Blackboard about working with InDesign, and we worked in ateliers on the product with lecturers on hand to help. It turned out to be a really nice way for me to express myself creatively and I actually got graded an 8.8.”
