Minor content

In this minor you will work on one or more projects that result in meaningful media concepts for commercial organizations. These concepts will support these organizations in becoming more meaningful and more sustainable towards the future. At the same time these concepts will also support the sustainable development goals set up by the United Nations. These “Sustainable Development Goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice”. (, 2020).

When we talk about the Sustainable Development Goals we mean the following seventeen goals set up by the UN.As we can see, you also want to have a role in solving these global challenges. Why would you otherwise choose this minor to specialize yourself? We believe that the creative and communication sectors have a crucial role in developing innovative products, services and business models and reaching new markets. We have set up this minor to guide as a steppingstone for your future career.

Structure of the minor

It is important to realize that this minor is based upon Design Based Education (Sinia & Aalst, 2018). Each component of DBE will be encountered:

  • Multidisciplinary collaboration
  • Sustainable education
  • International & intercultural
  • Personal leadership
  • Design thinking

This minor is intended to provide you with experience of developing meaningful media concepts. The projects in this module can be done either individually or in a team up to five students. During this minor you’ll have regular on-and offline ateliers (classes) and workshops. Field trips, (guest)lectures and additional workshops are offered based on specific demands. With so many Sustainable Development Goals and organizations, it is hard to predict to what kind of project you will be working on. But we have narrowed everything down to four possible types that you can choose from.

  • The Entrepreneur: you have your own company or want to start your own company that is aiming to support one or more of the SDG’s
  • The Intrapreneur: you know a company that is looking for a change towards a more sustainable way of working or is already doing so and has a great project for you.
  • The Black Box: We will be the first to admit it: we do not know everything. So, if there is anything that might not fit the previous three boxes: please tell us all about it!

The assessment will be done based on an assessment plan created by the student. The amount of assessments(moments)can vary per student (But at least one per student). 5 learning outcomes will be assessed. Within these moments the student proofs competence on one or more (max 5) learning outcome(s).

The assessment of each of the learning outcomes equals to 6EC, so 30EC in total for the semester. All the learning outcomes need to be sufficient to receive all the credits for this semester.

Learning outcomes:

  • Personal Leadership
  • Concept Development
  • Research
  • Meaningful Innovation
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration
