Are you interested in the technical aspects of modern ships? Do you want to deepen and broaden your knowledge of this industry? Then the minor Sustainable Offshore and Dredging Operations Technical might be perfect for you!

The latest techniques are covered in the fields of automation, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering. Key topics include:

  • Waste heat recovery
  • ORC installations
  • Electrical drives
  • Dredge pumps
  • Autonomous systems


The minor also looks towards the future, covering topics such as:

  • Future fuels
  • Hybrid propulsion

Minor content

  • Automation, including computer networks, PLCs in combination with hydraulic systems and electrical drives.
  • Waste heat recovery systems, including ORC installations and STED installations with steam and gas turbines.
  • Dredge pumps, covering dredging, land reclamation, and shore discharge. Explanation of key factors such as determining vacuum levels and working with mixtures.
  • Switchboard configuration in different DP (dynamic positioning) situations.
  • A look into the (near) future: What fuels can we use? How will the engine room be designed?
  • Various fuels will be discussed, such as LNG, hydrogen, ethanol, and ammonia. The possibility of CO₂ capture and storage (CCS) will also be addressed.
  • Students will also conduct their own research project (Project Management and Thesis).

This minor is offered by the Maritime Officer program.

Structure of the minor

The minor includes an average of 20 contact hours per week and consists of a total of 30 ECTS credits. 

Collaboration takes place with students from other maritime minors.
