Short course

Dynamic Positioning (DP) courses are mandatory for Seafaring personnel intending to become DP operators. Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz offers DP courses in accordance with the curriculum set by the Nautical Institute.

The duration of the course is four days, from Monday 08.30 hour until Thursday 15.30 hour. The course DP Induction is scheduled to take place on:

Entry standards

To enter this course the participants should provide a Certificate of Competence (CoC) or an equivalent. For students and cadets, a confirmation letter of the institute attending is also accepted.

Course fee

The DP Induction course fee is € 1975,- (exempt from VAT) including lunch, coffee and tea, excluding travel and subsistence expenses.

To enter this course, the participants should provide a Certificate of Competence (CoC) or an equivalent. For students and cadets, a confirmation letter from the Institute attending is also accepted.

Course contents

The DP Induction course involves both theory and practice on a simulated DP system. This course provides participants with basic knowledge of Dynamic Positioning (DP), the principles and practical use of DP systems.

Covered in this course are the following subjects:

  • Principles of DP
  • Elements of the DP system
  • Practical operation of the DP system
  • Position reference systems
  • Environment sensors and ancillary equipment
  • Power generation and supply and propulsion
  • DP operations

Every student is required to do an online exam. The exam is composed of multiple-choice questions and takes 1 hour and 15 minutes.

During the course we use the following types of DP equipment: Kongsberg k-pos DP2 connected to full mission bridge simulator, Kongsberg SDP3 advanced DP trainer, Kongsberg k-pos standalone DP systems, L3 standalone DP system, Navis standalone DP system, Imtech standalone DP systems, Praxis stan alone DP system.


The course is Nautical Institute compliant and approved. Upon successful completion of the course, a certificate and DP Operator Logbook (from the Nautical Institute) will be issued.
