New or current international non-EU/EEA students, residing in the Netherlands with a residence permit for study purposes, have to meet two requirements every year to keep their Dutch residence permit. Underneath we explain both requirements.

1. Obtain sufficient study credits (ECTS)

If you are following an AD, bachelor's or master's programme and have a residence permit for study purposes, you have to obtain sufficient study credits (ECTS) every academic year. Obtaining sufficient study credits (ECTS) is part of the rules and regulations of the Modern Migration Policy (MoMi).

The legislation is only applicable to non-EU/EEA students with a Dutch residence permit for the purpose of "study" (in Dutch: Studie). The MoMi legislation requires NHL Stenden to monitor study progress and inform students of what they should do if circumstances prevent them from meeting the MoMi requirement. The MoMi legislation requires all non-EU/EEA students to obtain at least 50% (sometimes up to 100%, for example for a Pre-Master or for PREP students for obtaining a sufficient IELTS test result) of the nominally available study credits (ECTS) for each academic year in order to keep their residence permit.

Is your study progress insufficient? NHL Stenden must then report this to the IND and you may lose your residence permit. (Exchange students who stay in the Netherlands for only a short period of time (less than a year) are exempted from the study progress monitoring).

2. Proof that you have sufficient financial means to live in the Netherlands.

If you are following an AD, bachelor's or master's programme and have a residence permit for study purposes, you must declare on a yearly basis that you have sufficient financial means to live and study in the Netherlands.

You will need to fill out a yearly statement as proof that you have sufficient financial means for the coming academic year.
