One-off reduction in statutory tuition fees for 2021-2022

If you have not previously followed a study programme at a university or university of applied sciences, you are entitled to a one-off reduction in tuition fees for the academic year 2021-2022. The statutory tuition fees for 2021-2022 have been set at €2,168. The Dutch government has decided this year to reduce the statutory tuition fees by half and set them at a one-off level of €1,084 as a means towards compensating for the loss of study opportunities caused by the corona pandemic.

The reduction in tuition fees for the first year of study applies to:

  • Students who have already started their programme or were previously enrolled at a public-funded university or university of applied sciences and who are entitled to pay the statutory tuition fee (for full-time or part-time), will pay the reduced fee of €1,084* in the academic year 2021-2022.
  • First-year students who have not previously followed a programme at a public-funded university or university of applied sciences will pay €542 for their first year of study in the academic year 2021-2022.
  • Students starting a bachelor’s degree or associate degree. The master’s degree is excluded.
  • Students who pay the statutory tuition fees. This applies to full-time students, dual students and part-time students.

Teacher training

For the teacher training programmes, students in their second year of study are also entitled to a reduction in tuition fees. The reduction of tuition fees in the second year of study applies to all students who:

What does it mean if you are eligible for the reduction?

  1. Example 1: You are an EU/EER national and planning on enrolling on a programme at NHL Stenden.).

    If you meet the conditions, you will pay €542 in tuition fees for your bachelor or associate degree the first year, instead of € 1,084. In your second year, you will pay the full €2,168 in tuition fees

    If you are on a teacher training programme, you will pay €542 in tuition fees in your second year. Tuition fees in your third year will be the normal €2,168.   

  2. Example 2: You are not an EU/EER national and you are planning on enrolling on a programme at NHL Stenden.
    Answer: If you do not meet the conditions set for paying statutory tuition fees, then you will have to pay institutional tuition fees. For the first year of study, you will pay € 7,266 in institutional tuition fees instead of €8,350. In your second year of study, you will pay the full fees of €8,350.

February start

If you are planning to start your studies in February, then you will pay the tuition fee divided by 7 (as in 7 months). The fees will then be €317.17 instead of € 542.
