The Hospitality Studies

The Hospitality Studies department conducts practice-oriented research into hospitality and hospitable behaviour. Hospitality is the perception one has upon being treated hospitably. As a company, person or nation you can create added value by being hospitable towards others. Hospitality can be expressed in many ways such as by being friendly, cordial and interested. We readily associate hospitality with the hotel and catering industries but the research conducted by the Hospitality Studies department is not limited to hospitality as a commercial activity. We research hospitality in every sense of the word.

We study three sub-areas: hospitality as part of a (popular) culture, hospitality in private life, and professional hospitality or hospitality within companies. In the latter case, hospitable behaviour is an economic activity in the sense of, for example, a company offering food, beverages or accommodation in exchange for money.
