Professor Gehrels (Lector) worked in the hospitality industry as an apprentice, wine steward and operations manager in various starred restaurants for ten years. In 1989 he made the transition to education and became a lecturer at NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences, where he teaches at the School of Hotel Management and is the director (Course Leader) of the Master’s degree programme in International Hospitality & Service Management.

After completing his degree in Business Administration, Gehrels earned an MSc from the University of Surrey in 1999 and, in 2004, an MBA from Oxford Brookes University, both in the UK. He went on to obtain a PhD from the University of Stirling in 2013. He is currently carrying out postdoctoral research at the University of Algarve in Portugal into innovation in the hospitality industry, with a focus on diversity and value creation. Professor Gehrels is a co-editor of the Research in Hospitality Management Journal, a member of the editorial board of the European Journal of Tourism Research, and also serves as an external examiner at universities in Britain and Ireland.

Inauguration

Dr Gehrels was inaugurated as a Professor of Applied Sciences in the Innovation in Hospitality Department on 28 April 2015.
