The inquiry-based learning of young children has long fascinated project team member Daphne Kiewiet of the Language Use and Learning professorship. She is involved in various projects of the professorship and also works as a primary school teacher.

“During my primary school teacher training (Pabo) I specialised in young children. While on a study trip to Norway, I became interested in the inquiry-based learning of children. I carried out my graduation research, with the title ‘The effect that lessons on principles have on the discourse and argumentation of children', at the Language Use and Learning professorship under the supervision of Frans Hiddink. I graduated in 2013, and have since worked as a primary school teacher.”

Inquiry-based learning

“Since 2014, I have worked in various projects within the professorship. In the Frisian Language Plan (Taalplan Frysk), we identify what primary schools are doing with regard to Frisian as a subject and what ambitions they have in this area. Within the Language Use project we carry out research in order to contribute to the children’s inquiry-based learning. By inquiry-based learning, I mean education as it should be in the 21st century: children who explore the world together, supported in this by their teachers.”

Within the Language Use project, we carry out research in order to stimulate the process in which children talk, read and write with one another regarding interesting subjects, and in this way develop understanding about the world around them. In this project, we are looking for the best format with which children can not only develop knowledge and understanding about the world, but also strengthen their oral and writing language skills.”
