Lector Jaap van de Loosdrecht is the founder and driving force behind the Centre of Expertise in Computer Vision at the NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences. Together with his team, he carried out more than 250 research projects in the area of Computer Vision.

“My interests include Computer Vision, Data Science, Pattern Matching and Sensor Fusion. These days I also carry out a great deal of research into UAVs, for example in the research Smart Vision for UAVs (RAAK SIA) [link to research Smart Vision for UAVs]. A special moment was when we presented our Twirre architecture for the UAVs at the International Micro Air Vehicles Conference and Flight Competition (IMAV). Our idea was so disruptive that we caused fierce discussions amongst the congress visitors. Our professorship, incidentally, is certified to fly the drones. I myself am also an RPAS pilot.”

More than 250 research projects

I have a background in electrical engineering and information science, and have two great hobbies: flying model airplanes and photography. I started as a software engineer in the business sector and later became a lecturer in Information Technology at the NHL Stenden. In 1996, I started up the Centre of Expertise Computer Vision, where we have since successfully carried out more than 250 research projects. The professorship & knowledge centre forms a bridge between fundamental research and the business sector. The combination of these three - research, education and business - is in my opinion an important condition for success. What's more, it's what makes working at the NHL Stenden for me so attractive.”
