Sjoeke Faasse, lecturer and head of the Language cluster of the primary school teacher training course (Pabo) of NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences, carries out research into the features of the language use of children in various oral and written genres.

“After the teacher training course and the second- and first-degree Teacher Education in Dutch, I worked as a classroom teacher in primary and secondary schools for many years. For quite some time now, I have been lecturing in all aspects of the subject Language in all phases of the primary school teacher training course (Pabo). I am also head of the Language cluster.”

“For the Language Use and Learning professorship, I carry out research into the development of oral and written language use in different genres. What do we actually consider to be a good presentation or a well-written review? What features should such a presentation or review possess? How do children develop in these and other oral and written genres? How can we strengthen the didactic repertoire of teachers so that they can look at the pupils’ language and language use from another perspective, and are able to reinforce language use in every domain? These are questions for which I am looking for answers.”

“It is clear that in language education there needs to be less focus on just those skills that are easily measured. Education in the 21st century, after all, requires all sorts of skills, whereby the development of good oral and written language skills is clearly important.”

Plenty expertise

“Research produces concrete results that can help to improve today’s work field, both in the teacher training programmes and the actual teaching in primary schools. Students can participate in the practice-based research of the professorship, and in doing so develop their research skills to a high level. There is a great deal of expertise in the field of research available at the professorship. It is and remains a challenge ensuring that the professorship continues to be a natural part of the study programme.”
