Tineke Duhoux is a researcher within the Healthcare & Innovation in Psychiatry lectorate whose focus is on the use of virtual reality in preventing a relapse into cannabis or other addiction. She believes that it is very important for the target group of the research to be heard.

'I have primarily worked in education, first as a teacher at a primary school and ,after completing my Pedagogy MO-A, as a remedial teacher and coordinator on a project for students who had completed their teacher training. After a long period in other jobs, I became a teacher again in 2008, first at the Friesland College in Heerenveen, and a year later on the NHL Stenden’s Welfare HBO programme. In 2016 I completed the Special Education Needs Master’s degree programme.'

Relapse prevention in addiction care

'My research examines how a virtual reality programme can be used to prevent relapse as part of addiction care, especially in young people. Particularly interesting is the question of how young people can become addicted at such a young age, and what we can do to prevent this. In practice, we have seen that after becoming clean, young people can quickly fall back into old habits.'

'With this research, a collaboration with Verslavingszorg Noord Nederland (VNN, North Netherlands Addiction Care), I hope to be able to contribute to preventing relapses. What are clients’ experiences of using a game to help prevent relapses? I believe it is important for the target group of the research to be heard. We have to translate the results of practice-oriented research into improved conditions for the target group.'
