Shifting gears

Gerda Elzinga (38):

“If you want something, you can achieve it. I am convinced of that.”

Are you secretly dreaming of pursuing a different career, but are you unsure whether a part-time study is your cup of tea? In this item, we will show you that studying part-time is for everyone. Gerda Elzinga is one of those people. She is in her third year of her Biology Teacher programme. “I no longer got any satisfaction from my work; I wanted to learn new things and continue my personal development.”

Sometimes you may get the feeling that ‘something’ needs to change in your life. For Gerda, this meant that at a certain point, she needed to shift gears. She had a job as an administrative worker and receptionist, after which she chose to do something completely different. “I knew for a while that something in my life needed to change. The work I did was no longer satisfying to me and I wanted more. After years of doubt, at one point I knew for sure: to get ahead, I need to continue to grow. I am going back to studying!”

Family and studying

Gerda enjoys explaining things and she has always had a passion for biology. “I could not be happier with my decision; all the pieces of the puzzle have fallen into place. Combining work, taking care of my children, and studying is not easy, but I am incredibly motivated. If you want something, you can achieve it. I am convinced of that.”

Necessary changes

Gerda used to be quite shy, which is why she did not think that a teacher programme would suit her. “Taking a leap of faith and to go from being a receptionist to a biology teacher is quite a feat. To prepare for the entrance exam, I have watched a lot of YouTube videos. There are channels upon channels filled with maths and biology teachers who share their knowledge at the level that I want to teach at as well. I have watched those videos for hours on end.”

On the right track

At the moment, Gerda has found her way into the classroom as a teacher’s assistant. “I really enjoy working with children. I cannot wait get them excited about biology and to pass along my knowledge.” In addition to teaching, she also enjoys being back in class herself. “I appreciate my fellow students and I do not feel old at all. It really feels like we are all in this together. I am much happier now that I know I am on the right track.”
