Short course

This course provides training to masters and chief mates of ships operating in polar waters and to address those additional provisions as required by the Polar Code, in order to take into account the climatic conditions of polar waters and to meet appropriate standards of maritime safety and pollution prevention.

Polar Waters includes both Arctic and Antarctic waters as defined in SOLAS and MARPOL regulations.

Course duration and dates

The duration of the course is 5 days, from Monday 8.30am until Friday 3.30pm. The course is scheduled to take place on:

  • 26  –  30 November 2018
  • 21  –  25 January 2019
  • 11  –  15 February 2019
  • 11  –  15 March 2019
  • 25  –  29 March 2019
  • 06  –  10 May 2019
  • 01  –  05 July 2019

Course group size will be between 4 and 8 trainees.

Entry requirements

This course is aimed at Masters and chief mates on ships operating in polar waters. Every candidate for a certificate in Advanced Training for ships operating in Polar Waters must have completed an approved basic training for ships operating in polar waters and meet the standard of competence specified in section A-V/4, paragraph 1 of the STCW Code; and have at least 2 months of approved seagoing service in the deck department, at management level or while performing watch-keeping duties in an operational level, within polar waters or other equivalent approved seagoing service.

Course fee

The course fee of Advanced Training Ice Navigation in Polar aters is € 1975,- (exempt from VAT) including lunch, coffee and tea, excluding travel and subsistence expenses.

Course contents

The course is designed to meet the Mandatory minimum STCW requirements for the training and qualifications of masters and deck officers on ships operating in polar waters, by the 2010 Manila Amendments, specifically as these apply to Tables A-V/4-2 “Specification of the minimum standard of competence in advanced training for ships operating in polar waters”.

The theoretical part of the course will cover:

  • Vessel Characteristics
  • Manoeuvring in Ice
  • Planning
  • Icebreaker Operations
  • Crew Preparations, Working Conditions and Safety
  • Simulation

Practical content

The lectures will take place in a classroom. The lectures will make use of practical examples In addition simulation training is incorporated in the course. The simulator exercises create situations that provide an opportunity to acquire the required skills as specified in the regulations.

Certification and approval

The training programme has been approved by the Netherlands Shipping Inspectorate. Upon successful completion of the course a certificate for Advanced training for ships operating in polar waters will be issued.
