Cybersafety: human aspects of a safe digital society

Theft of bicycles used to be the most common form of crime in the Netherlands. Due to the digitisation of society, however this is no longer the case. Hacking is now the most prevalent form of crime. How does the digitisation of security risks affect policies of governments, companies and the behaviour of the public? Are you interested in contributing to safety in a digitising society? Minor content

The central theme of this course is ‘Safety in a digitised society’. Cybercrime is all crime where ICT is used as a means and/or a goal. Some examples of cybercrime are hacking, ransomware, child pornography and e-fraud. Implications of the digitisation of society on security risks, legislation and protective mechanisms are explored during lectures, workshops and assignments. This minor will discuss trends in cybercrime and cybersafety. Moreover, you will learn about digital resilience in companies, society and education. In the cybercrime experiment (stop or become a cybercriminal) you will experiment in enhancing digital resilience. Due to the novelty of this field and enhancing awareness, previous students have created new and exciting products which are still used in the private sector. Moreover, you will learn about implications for (local) government. For example, we discuss possibilities of a mayor when faced with a future project X threat. The minor is not technological in nature. The focus is on ‘human factors’.  

Structure of the minor

​The minor consists of (guest) lectures, assignments provided by the working field. Learning objectives are primarily focused on knowledge of Cybersafety, research and policy. Assignments and experiments are in cooperation with our partners. We try to organize a working visit in the minor. In the past we had working visits for example to Scyber (cybersecurity and safety center) at Schiphol and the Defense Cyber Command Center.

The minor Safety in a digitised society is meant for bachelor students who are in the third year of their studies in the field of safety, security, law, forensics or ICT. Students from NHL Stenden University as well as students from other universities of applied sciences are welcome to participate. The minor is not technological in nature. The focus is on ‘human factors’. Nevertheless, a minimum interest in technological developments is required.
