Postillion Hotels invests 10,000 euros in an idea developed by Hotel Management students of NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences

Wednesday 28 April 2021

At NHL Stenden students are stimulated to explore what happens in their fields in practice. Within the educational concept Design Based Education (DBE), students work intensively with fellow students and with organizations and companies, tackling current issues in their field or work. The positive results achieved by four first-year students of the Hotel Management program is proof that this method leads to good outcomes. Together, they developed a campaign for Postillion Hotels and they did this successfully; the hotel was so convinced of the idea that they invested 10.000 euros to actually roll out the campaign.

Three day hackathon

Together, NHL Stenden Hotel Management School and Postillion Hotels organized The NXT Campaign Challenge. Students were given the task to create an employer branding campaign. The challenge: to create a contemporary campaign that helps Postillion Hotels to better position itself in the market to attract new employees and interns. During a three-day hackathon, students worked in groups to develop a prototype for the campaign, in which their ideas were presented and substantiated. The students were supervised by Jeroen Kraak (The Next Lab), Kim van Velzen (KIMspiration) and Mark Struik and Erik-Jan Ginjaar (Postillion Hotels).

Recruiting new talent in Covid-19 times

Recruiting talent, especially in these times, has proved to be no easy task. "In these challenging times it is quite difficult to find the right people," says Mark Struik, HR manager of Postillion Hotels. "The outbreak of COVID-19 has made a career (start) in the hotel industry uncertain and therefore less attractive even though there are still plenty of opportunities. We all know now the great value of hospitality and meeting each other physically. Postillion is looking for energetic, ambitious hotel employees with an eye for detail and people with whom we can make the difference in the field of hospitality. And the new NXT CAMPAIGN is certainly going to help us with that."

And the winners are…

Students Aliisa Niittylä, Jaro Klamer, Ettje Dittmann and Cas van IJssel won the challenge and convinced Pastillion Hotels to invest 10,000 euros to put their idea into practice. The students are proud of this achievement. "You get to experience this once in a lifetime," says Ettje about the experience. "Not many hotel schools offer students the opportunity to work with real companies and with a real budget especially in the first year. I learned a lot from this and am extremely grateful to Postillion for this opportunity."
