Kees Grooteman

3rd year International Hospitality Management student

I study International Hospitality Management at Stenden Hotel Management School, which offers 30 different minors as part of NHL Stenden’s Grand Tour. Every location in NHL Stenden’s global campus network offers a range of minors. I chose to go on Grand Tour, because I very much wanted to do the minor Advanced Wine Studies in South Africa.

”It has been an amazing experience.”

This minor is a collaboration between Stenden South Africa in Port Alfred and the Cape Wine Academy. It consisted of three courses, which I had to pass. The topics ranged from both old and new world wines, tasting an analysing wines, all the way down to learning about the type of soil in the vineyards of Pauillac (France) and the average rainfall in Marlborough (New Zealand). Quite intense!

Studying in South Africa has really challenged me; living in a unfamiliar place and in a different culture to which you have to adapt. Being a direct and efficient person with a hands-on mentality myself, it sometimes was difficult to cope with the more laid back mentality in South Africa.

But I have absolutely no regrets! It has been an amazing experience, during which I have met incredible people, travelled the beautiful South African (wine)lands and most of all: I’ve learned a lot.
