What is giftedness?
But what is giftedness exactly? A student showcasing characteristics of giftedness typically possesses an IQ around or above 130, leading to a different way of thinking, feeling, and experiencing the world. Many experts assert that giftedness encompasses more than just intelligence; it often embodies a distinct way of being, as articulated in the Delphi model:
“A gifted person is a fast and smart thinker who can handle complex matters. Autonomous, curious and driven by nature. A sensitive and emotional person, living intensely. He or she takes pleasure in creating.” (Kooijman, 2007)
Gifted students can achieve great heights; however, this journey is not always smooth. They may encounter challenges such as motivation issues, underdeveloped study skills, high sensitivity, difficulty connecting with fellow students, or a different thinking pace, which can sometimes result in academic struggles.
