With emerging demand for new tourism products, Community-based tourism experiences increased popularity. Nowadays, sustainability – environmental, social, and economic – is increasingly recognized as the benchmark for all tourism businesses, of all sizes, in all destinations, and across all sectors of the industry. This minor affects a whole range of industries including travel, hospitality and many other.

Inhoud van de minor

Trending CBT/sustainable tourism related developments in Thailand and/or the ASEAN region are discussed and assessed in Student Led Seminar (SLS) and Blogs. New CBT products and marketing strategies will be presented to the local authorities from the field work community. Work and stay in a regional Thai community to experience a unique perspective of living in Thailand. An individual development portfolio including vlogs to develop personal leadership & intercultural awareness and reflect on own behaviours in Thailand and Asia. 

Opzet van de minor

Entry 1: Sustainable Trends & Developments (3 EC) 
The student critically and methodically assesses sustainable tourism-related trends and synthesises these with socio-cultural developments within Thailand and the ASEAN region with the purpose of initiating decision-making processes among tourism stakeholders.   

Entry 2: Community Experience (9 EC) 
The student initiates a practical community-based tourism development in accordance with the latest and most effective marketing techniques that is founded on thorough ethnographic research within a community which results in a sustainable improvement in the ownership and benefits of tourism within the community.   

Entry 3: Personal Development (3 EC) 
The student is able to determine, and reflect on their own personal development throughout the minor with relation to skills necessary in CBT, and cross-cultural issues needed to manage and lead in both a global environment as well as in isolated and remote communities. 

Toetsing

  • Entry 1: Weblog in which the student has conducted a secondary research on contemporary issues in sustainable tourism in Thailand. 
  • Entry 2: Presentation to tourism industry to recommend on participatory tourism planning and support in the development of a community. Mystery guest research will be used and the themes of research are based on the Blogs. Report community experience through story telling. 
  • Entry 3: Students reflect on their own personal (intercultural) skills, their development during the minor and use this to decide on their future career as a tourism manager. This is done in a digital portfolio.

GT minors are open to all students of NHL Stenden.
