Heritage is used to create an identity, employment, economic regeneration and bring new uses to connections with the past. Examples of heritage are legends, castles, ceremonies, monuments, language, ruins, symbols, museums, traditions and various personal artefacts.

Inhoud van de minor

The module comprises practice and theory and offers you an opportunity to engage in a detailed study of heritage experience management and the various related policy initiatives found within the commercial, public and voluntary sectors. Cooperating with other students in a Design Based Education setting, you work on an assignment from an industry representative. You will develop and carry out a viable, marketable heritage themed experience in the form of a guided tour, which is the practical outcome of the minor. An integral part of the minor is a week-long fieldtrip to the historic and heritage-rich city of Edinburgh, Scotland*. This field trip includes various presentations, activities and excursions around heritage experience management in Edinburgh and Scotland Participants need to consider costs for travel, food, accommodation and activities.    Ultimately, you learn to create, maximize and manage a heritage themed, commercially viable experience. You also analyse a heritage management problem and provide advice to industry representatives.  .

*In case traveling is not possible due to COVID-19, there will be an alternative programme offered

Opzet van de minor

The module includes a field trip to Edinburgh with presentations from organisations involved in heritage tourism and its development, conservation, marketing and interpretation, OR, an alternative programme of similar nature that does not include traveling. The fieldt trip to Edinburgh will cost around €400 and €500. The alternative programme will be no more than 100,- but will only run in case traveling is not possible due to COVID-19. 

This minor is part of the Premaster Tourism Geography and Planning. 

Toetsing

The minor comprises student-led workshops, themed guided-tour, field trip/day-excursions* and an open book essay. Furthermore, students will follow the guest lectures of the module Tourism Policy and Planning of the Masters of International Leisure and Tourism Studies (MILTS) at Stenden.
