About Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz
The Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz (MIWB) consists of a maritime university, providing programmes for masters and chief engineers 'all ships', as well as hydrographic surveyor. A full mission simulator training centre incorporating the national maritime simulation training facilities, available for all Dutch maritime cadets, an own seagoing training and survey vessel and a fully equipped student campus with comprehensive restaurant and library facilities.
Maritime university
As part of NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences, MIWB has over 600 full-time students. The mission of MIWB is to continue to provide high-quality ship’s officers and hydrographic surveyors for national and foreign merchant fleets and industries. All while being the Centre of Excellence for maritime training and simulation in the Netherlands and beyond. Further objectives include international support and assistance activities to maritime academies and simulator centres in other emerging maritime countries.
These goals are reached with a dedicated staff of about 50 people, most of whom have a seafaring background, up to master or chief engineer level. As an additional feature, the institute has its own student fund which covers all costs during the study period. Through the collective participation and an even distribution of the costs over the four years of study, the actual monthly fee remains at a competitively modest level.
