Professorship of Applied Sciences in Computer Vision & Artificial Intelligence
Mark Tiele Westra (1971) holds a PhD in Theoretical Physics from Eindhoven University of Technology and an MSc in Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society. He has over 30 years of experience in software development and brings expertise in machine learning, Large Language Models (LLMs) and Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) systems. He recently worked on machine learning projects with the World Bank for irrigation identification in Africa using Google Earth Engine. Previously, he was product manager at Akvo, where he developed data analysis and visualisation tools for international development projects. At NHL Stenden, Mark is Associate Professor of Applied Sciences (associate lector), responsible for the Applied AI research line within the Computer Vision & Artificial Intelligence professorship. He is also practor Applied AI at Firda, where he leads the practorate and bridges AI research, vocational education (MBO) and regional industry.
