Academic research

Together with professors, lecturer-researchers and students, we deliver scientifically grounded solutions to current and future challenges in the leisure, recreation and tourism sector.

Academic perspectives on leisure, recreation and tourism

Discover the power of collaboration between education, industry and research in our mission to develop scientific solutions to the challenges shaping the future of the leisure, recreation and tourism sector. We operate as a vibrant hub where insights from different sources converge, enabling organisations to gain a solid understanding of evidence-based perspectives that will influence the direction of the sector.

What sets us apart is that a significant number of our tourism experts are also actively involved in teaching. This unique interplay ensures that the knowledge we generate through research projects is directly integrated into education, creating a strong exchange between theory and practice. Step into the future of leisure, recreation and tourism, guided by the forward-thinking insights that emerge from our collaboration between education, industry and research.

Academic knowledge networks

We share our expertise with partners in the Netherlands and abroad through the following networks:

  • Centre of Expertise Leisure, Tourism & Hospitality (CELTH):
The only national knowledge centre for leisure, tourism and hospitality, dedicated to developing and sharing knowledge in these fields. We co-founded this centre together with HZ University of Applied Sciences and Breda University of Applied Sciences.

  • Future of Tourism Coalition:
We have joined the movement reshaping the future of tourism: the Future of Tourism Coalition. Through this partnership, we contribute to building a better future for travel and tourism.

  • International Competence Network for Tourism Research and Education (ICNT):
We are part of a competence network of 9 international universities of applied sciences, collaborating to combine knowledge and carry out joint research projects. This network was initiated by Fachhochschule Westküste.

Academic publications

We continuously share our findings on future-oriented tourism research through publications in international journals, books and reports. In addition, we publish our own journal, Journal of Tourism Futures, in collaboration with Emerald Publishing. Through this platform, our tourism experts and external researchers provide a broad audience with insights into their research. Our publications address globally relevant tourism topics, viewed through the lens of future thinking. These publications are researched and written by our team, with contributions from qualified academic experts. Curious about who we are? Visit our team page.
