Education system and coaching
‘I like the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) system. Each module, you have a new class and a new tutor, because everyone is culturally different, you learn to accept them and the way they think. In the beginning, it can be hard to adjust to a new class, but that’s part of the learning process. It’s really cool that you get to know all the other students really well.
Another important part of the study programme is the coaching system. It sometimes sparks useful conversations. Mostly, it is a way to get to know yourself. This is an important part of being successful in a managing function.’
Life in Leeuwarden
‘I really like Leeuwarden. Before I started my study here, I lived in Washington. The difference between my home village in Italy and Washington was huge. Leeuwarden is not too big, but also not too small. It’s perfect for me. When I walk through the city centre I see a lot of familiar faces.
I decided to do my minors here as well. I’ve already travelled a lot and staying here saves me money.’
Practical tourism course in English
'After high school, I didn’t know what to study. I worked as an Au Pair for 2 years. During this period I considered my study options. My friends said that I should look into the Netherlands. The tuition fees here are less expensive than in the US, for instance. Tourism held my interest, so I looked for an English tourism study and NHL Stenden popped up.
When I saw Stenden’s combination of practice and theory, my mind was made up. The study is not practical in the way that you do things in real life, but the cases you have are so realistic that you can imagine how it would be in real life. In Italy, they don’t offer this way of studying.'
International opportunities
‘Go with the flow is my motto. There are so many options and possibilities open to me on the path I am taking. For instance, I chose German as a second language to study. So maybe I’ll go to Germany next. But it’s also possible that I will go back to Italy. I have an interest in marketing, working with children and sustainability, so it would be perfect if I can somehow combine these three.’
* Please note that, while PBL is still used in the majority of our courses, all study programmes work towards implementing the new Design Based Education system.
