“I decided this was the degree for me.”
Clementine Deyssard
Hospitality Management, Associate Degree student

Even though she knew she wanted to work in hospitality, Clementine wasn’t sure which degree would be right for her. The Spotlight On webinars helped her choose.

“It was quite a hard process for me to find the right degree. I really wanted to study abroad and came across NHL Stenden online. It seemed affordable in terms of tuition fees and fairly easy to get to from where I lived in France, so that was all fine, but choosing the right degree to do. That proved trickier.”

Associate vs Bachelor

“I narrowed down my subject choice to leisure & events, hospitality and tourism. From the website, I decided that the hospitality management programme was the best fit for me as it covered all the subjects I was really interested in, but then I still had to choose between doing the bachelor's degree, the 3-year fast track programme or the associate degree. I was really torn between the bachelor and the associate degree and though I felt the bachelor programme was probably too long for me, I did like the idea of the internship and the chance to travel abroad with the Grand Tour. I decided to do the Spotlight On event to see if I could get any answers. It turned out to be really helpful. Things became clearer simply by being able to talk to someone. There are lots of useful Q&As on the website, but my questions were very specific to my situation, so having the interaction of the webinar was a real advantage. I really got to find out what the differences, and similarities, were between the two degrees I was interested in.”

Personal interaction

In the Spotlight On webinars, you have students, lecturers and coaches ready and waiting to answer your questions. They give lots of information about the programme itself and as the students presenting are already on the course and living in the Netherlands, you get to hear a lot about their experiences. And then there's always time to ask your own questions too. It meant that I found out that the associate degree was more suited to me, and that there was always the option to continue my studies afterwards by joining the bachelor's programme. I did the Spotlight on webinar for the bachelor programme too and talking and listening to lots of different people made me more confident of my decision.”

The webinars act like a kind of ice-breaker for the start of your studies. I stayed in touch with some of the hosts I met in the webinar and was able to ask them questions later, which really helped. Actually, I got to talk to lots of people and saw names in the chat that I later recognised when I joined the StudyStartWeek, the intro week at NHL Stenden, so that was really nice. It means you're in touch with people from different years, hear different things and get to find out what happens at different stages of the degree. It means you can be sure you really are choosing the best degree for you.
