“I’ve been a nurse for 27 years, working the last few years as a district nurse for Het Friese Land in Leeuwarden. For years, I’d been wanting to teach on a nursing programme and my dream finally came true on 1 September last year. But less than six months after my career switch, I might be going back to bedside nursing. When I read the cry for help from the healthcare sector asking everyone to help, my heart started beating faster. I’m a doer, a go-getter that can’t just sit at home. Especially not now when help is needed so badly. Through the programme, we thought up the Nurse Force project in which, if it becomes necessary, we and the students can get to work in one of the corona centres in Friesland. Fortunately, I’m still on the BIG register so I’ll also be able to carry out nursing interventions myself, but my main task will be to supervise students on the workfloor, whether they’re at a corona centre or other doing their internship elsewhere. As teachers, we try and supervise our students on their internships as much as possible ourselves so as to relieve healthcare staff of the task. From putting on a protective suit to dealing with emotional stories, there’s a lot to do.”
