“The people on Grand Tour were such a highlight – I’d tell anyone considering it to go with an open mind and be ready to socialise!”

International Teacher Education for Primary Schools (ITEPS) student

Growing up in an Italian family who likes to explore, it has always felt natural for Greta to seek out new places and cultures. Drawn to NHL Stenden's small community and Design-Based Education approach, Greta found ITEPS – a degree that mixes her love for travel and passion for working with children. That sense of adventure has stayed with Greta, taking her all the way to Indonesia as part of Grand Tour, where she gained valuable hands-on experience in the classroom.

“When I was choosing a degree, I knew I didn’t want a typical desk job – I wanted something that would allow me to interact with people. I first looked into sociology and anthropology, but neither felt quite right. Then I discovered the ITEPS programme, and it seemed like the perfect fit. Now, looking back, I can confidently say that this programme has exceeded my expectations. I’ve made life-long friends, and the Meppel community, along with the university, has been key in my growth. One moment I’ll never forget is the first time I stood in front of a class and taught my own lesson. Even though I was exhausted at the end of the day, I couldn’t wait to go back the next morning. Seeing the kids’ faces light up and feeling those butterflies was all the proof I needed to know I had made the right choice – I was ready to learn more.”

Lessons beyond the classroom

“I decided to go on Grand Tour because I ‘d long dreamed of teaching in Africa or Asia, and Indonesia was at the top of my list. Grand Tour gave me the perfect opportunity to live outside Europe in a supportive university environment. On the day of my flight, I was a little anxious, but as soon as I arrived, the nerves faded. I was instantly welcomed into a warm, tight-knit community. Everyone was excited about making new friends and exploring together, which made all the difference. Even though I felt homesick at times, knowing that others were going through the same thing made it much easier to settle in.”

“When it came to choosing my minor, I went for courses that would challenge me and push me out of my comfort zone. Living in Indonesia definitely had its overwhelming moments, and I had fears about not fitting in, but on reflection, those worries almost seem silly. The people I met on Grand Tour were such a highlight – I’d tell anyone considering it to go with an open mind and be ready to socialise!”

Unforgettably unforgettable

“Looking back, I feel incredibly grateful for the people I met and the experiences we shared. And my parents might be a bit tired of hearing me talk non-stop about everything I’m doing, but I know they’re just happy to see me so content and thriving. Grand Tour has shown me that teaching is exactly what I want to do, and the memories I’ve made at NHL Stenden will always be close to my heart.”
