Leonie Schäper (21) comes from Emmerich: the last town on the Rhine before the Dutch border. “So it was always an option for me to study in the neighbouring country.” She chose Communication & Multimedia Design (CMD) at NHL Stenden in Leeuwarden.

Why the Netherlands

“I had the idea of studying design for a while, but I didn't know which subject exactly suited me. Then I came across the Communication & Multimedia Design (CMD) programme in Leeuwarden, which was much broader than the German design programmes. I was also excited about the possibility of going abroad and improving my language skills in English and Dutch. So, I went to the open day and was just thrilled about the programme and the NHL Stenden university of applied sciences and knew this is where I want to study.

After I enrolled and successfully found a room in a shared flat, the intro week started. We explored the charming city of Leeuwarden and I felt at home in my new surroundings right from the start. The Dutch language was also no problem, as all the students and lecturers are very nice and always happy to help. In addition, there are many international students in Leeuwarden, which brings you into contact with many cultures.”

Learning goals and real projects

“Communication & Multimedia Design is a broad study and offers free development in everything you want to learn. In fact, you can decide for yourself what you want to learn. There are no restrictions or predefined topics. That's not always easy, because you have to show a lot of initiative and are responsible for setting your own learning goals. Still, I think the system is great and I notice how I am becoming more and more independent, which will help me a lot later in my career.

Another feature of CMD is that we don't write exams. The course is very practical. You always work together in small groups of about 3-6 students on a project from real clients. My favourite project, for example, was an assignment from the company Jamzone from Leeuwarden. We were given the task to develop a solution to help students live a healthier life. I learned a lot about the psychology of behaviour change and we ended up developing a concept for an app.”

Honest feedback

“Sincere feedback is paramount within CMD. From my school days in Germany, I was not used to being open and giving or receiving constructive criticism. However, what I quickly learned is that it is best to learn from mistakes. I really appreciate getting honest feedback from lecturers and fellow students so that I can always develop further.

Personal growth is also supported actively in our degree programme. There is the competence Growth & Reflection, where you learn everything about your own development as a person. For example, you can work on your time management, self-confidence, or your mindset. This has helped me a lot and it is nice that the programme not only teaches skills that help you in your job, but also personally in life.”
