Broad degree
“Just over three years ago, when I was finishing high school, I was looking for a field of study that would give me a broad range of insights and experience. Hotel Management School Leeuwarden turned out to be the perfect choice because it wasn't just about working in hotels but also includes subjects like finance, marketing, human resource management, and much more. The variety of subjects mean that when I graduate, I'll be able to work in a wide range of roles.”
A typical day
“In Leeuwarden, a typical day usually starts with a friendly cup of coffee or tea with your classmates before classes begin. During classes, our lecturers explain the subjects really clearly and we get plenty of time to work on assignments together. At breaktime, we often eat in the Food Court, where our fellow students work as part of their internship experience, and where we can enjoy a tasty lunch. We have internships throughout the entire programme and I personally think this is super beneficial! It's allowed me to get a clearer idea of the direction I want to take and, of course, the kind of work that doesn't suit me.”
Working up to a managerial position
“In your first year, you start your practical training working at a basic level. In the second year, you take on a supervisory role, and in the third year, you work at managerial level during the practical period. Everything you learn in those first three years comes together in the final 10-month internship in the fourth year.”
“I also still have a part-time job in a hotel and restaurant in Twente where I grew up. It’s given me truly valuable practical experience and though I mainly work in the restaurant, I also handle Front Office duties, such as checking guests in and out. You learn these aspects in your first year of study as well.”
Discovering what you enjoy
“Through this degree, you not only discover what you enjoy but also what you enjoy less. Originally, I wanted to work in human resource management, but now, during my internship, I've realized that I don't want to sit in an office the entire week. Ideally, I'd now like a career where I work partly in an office and partly actively in the field, perhaps in the events industry.”
