“Embracing change from Aruba's shores to Leeuwarden's horizon”

24-year-old Aruban Valerie Sanglay has come to love Design-Based Education and how it means she can dive into practical experience working with companies in the field. Valerie was drawn to Leeuwarden by the charm of the city and she's now an active member of the student association Dionysus.

Design-Based Education

“The education system on Aruba was all about theory and tests – a world away from the DBE system at Hotel Management School Leeuwarden. Here, we strike a balance between theory and hands-on learning, and I really have come to love DBE. In the second year, we dived into real-world experience by working with companies in the field. It's an incredible way of helping us put our knowledge into practice. I've grown to appreciate this approach so much more, and it's made such a difference to my educational journey.”

Restaurant Wannee, Notiz Hotel & Canteen

“My very first practical experience was in the Canteen at NHL Stenden, and then later in the Restaurant Wannee kitchen. It was an unexpected turn in my journey because I had never worked in a professional kitchen before. As it turns out, I discovered a hidden passion, and especially for the feeling of accomplishment that follows. My journey also led me to explore various departments, including front office at Notiz Hotel, canteen, food court, and catering. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be front office. I spent three years working in this area back in Aruba and there's nothing quite like connecting with guests and making their experience memorable.”

Small-town charm

“I was drawn to the Leeuwarden because of the city's small-town charm. It's so different to many of the huge cities that the Netherlands has. I wanted to break free from the familiar and explore new horizons, meet people from different countries of the world. When I first came here I lived in the Student Stay accommodation for a year, and now I share an apartment with my boyfriend, who's equally passionate about our field. Our apartment feels like a home away from home, and we love having a drink with friends on the weekends and exploring the city centre of Leeuwarden.”

Extracurricular activities

“Outside the class, I'm an active member of the Dionysus student association. We have delicious wine tastings and regular bar outings every two weeks. My boyfriend and I also host a podcast and create videos, where we discuss culture and life in the Netherlands, Aruba, and more. Adapting to Dutch directness and the different climate were initial culture shocks, but I’m actually starting to like the directness and the weather!”

“I'm also the president of the Social Media Team at Hotel Management School Leeuwarden. This role is a great opportunity offered by the programme that allows me to express my passion for social media and marketing while learning about leadership skills.”

Global Network

“My most cherished experience during this journey so far has been connecting with people from all over the world. Meeting individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds has enriched my life and created a network that will be valuable in the future. As for what lies ahead, I plan to complete my bachelor's degree and perhaps pursue a master's. And I need to deciding between doing my final ten-month internship in the Netherlands or returning to Aruba; it's a challenging choice.”
