At the presentation of the SustainaBul trophy to the most sustainable higher education institution in the Netherlands, NHL Stenden finished in ninth place. This 'green' ranking was announced Friday afternoon during sustainability event Groene Peper. This year's edition was organised at and with NHL Stenden in Leeuwarden.

With a ninth place, NHL Stenden continues to rise on the SustainaBul ranking compared to previous years. In 2021, NHL Stenden finished in position 24. A year later, the university advanced ten places to the fourteenth position. And now NHL Stenden finds itself in place nine. This year's winner is Van Hall Larenstein. A total of 33 higher education institutions were assessed.

Sustainable initiatives

Sustainability plays an important role in everything NHL Stenden does. Based on the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the university of applied sciences continues to work on creating a sustainable environment for students, staff and partners. There are also sustainable initiatives, such as BIJENPACT and the Green Wave: a movement of staff, lecturers and students who together contribute to sustainability.

SustainaBul

The SustainaBul has been organised annually by Studenten voor Morgen since 2012. Participating institutions are assessed on the themes of sustainability in research, education, operations and integral approach. Special initiatives also weigh in, as do the fight against poverty and hunger and the promotion of gender equality.

Groene Peper

Traditionally, the SustainaBul is awarded during Groene Peper. This year's edition took place at NHL Stenden. Groene Peper is the only event on sustainability for mbo, hbo and wo in the Netherlands for networking, inspiration and/or knowledge exchange. The event lasts a week and is intended for everyone in further education with an interest in sustainability.
