NHL Stenden says goodbye to Erica Schaper as chair of the Executive Board

After seven years, NHL Stenden said farewell to its chair of the Executive Board, Erica Schaper, on Wednesday 18 December. Under her leadership, the university of applied sciences flourished, evolving into a resilient institution with a strong regional foundation and a distinctive international profile. Erica’s warm personality, sharp vision, and people-centred approach have left an indelible mark, inspiring and connecting people both within and beyond the university.

A celebratory event marked her departure, with the theme of broad prosperity in the region taking centre stage – a perfect reflection of NHL Stenden’s new strategic institutional plan. Among the speakers expressing their appreciation for Erica’s contributions were Arno Brok (King’s Commissioner), Alderman Abel Reitsma, and Jannewietske de Vries (chair of the Supervisory Board). Additionally, professors Jolanda Tuinstra and Nynke Boonstra shared their insights into the role of practice-based research in driving broad prosperity.

Erica closed the event with a heartfelt speech, reflecting on her journey and expressing gratitude for her time at NHL Stenden: "For me, the essence of NHL Stenden lies in its atmosphere. It’s a place where you are encouraged to experiment and push boundaries, and where you are appreciated for who you are. That sense of community, where courage and engagement flourish, is something I will always cherish."

Throughout her tenure, Erica played a pivotal role in NHL Stenden’s growth and development. Her leadership brought a people-centred approach to education and emphasised the importance of inclusivity and sustainability. She championed vital themes such as mental health and the strength of diversity, earning deep respect and admiration from colleagues and students alike.
