Speed skater Merijn Scheperkamp became European champion at the European Sprint Championships last weekend. The 22-year-old student Biologie en Medisch Laboratoriumonderzoek won the overall standings in Hamar, Norway, capturing sprint gold. It is Scheperkamp's very first European title.

The European Sprint Championship is organized once every two years. During the championship four races are scheduled: twice the 500 meters and twice the 1,000 meters. The four results all count toward the overall standings: the skater with the fewest total points crowns himself the winner. With a total of 139,050 points, Scheperkamp stayed ahead of compatriots Hein Otterspeer (second) and Kai Verbij (fourth), among others.
