NHL Stenden’s Supervisory Board has appointed two new board members. As of 1 July 2025, Evelyn Finnema (responsible for Education, Research and Internationalisation) and Carlo Segers (responsible for operational affairs) will join the Executive Board.

New Executive Board

Jannewietske de Vries, chair of the supervisory board: “We are extremely pleased with the appointment of Evelyn Finnema and Carlo Segers. Their appointments create a strong and experienced team that complements each other, has an international perspective and is strongly rooted in the north. Evelyn will apply her relevant network, scientific background, experience in higher education and research as well as her key expertise to the education portfolio, while Carlo’s executive experience in professional education and in change management is an excellent fit for the operational affairs portfolio. We are convinced that they and Marc Otto will form a decisive and collaborative team.”

Evelyn Finnema

Evelyn Finnema is currently professor of Nursing Sciences and Education at UMCG/University of Groningen, professor of applied sciences in nursing and education at Hanze University of Applied Sciences, and Governmental Chief Nursing Officer for the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. She has previously worked as a director for Hoofdzaken in the Dutch Mental Healthcare Association and is a familiar face within our organisation: as professor of applied sciences she has worked with our Health & Welfare research group since 2010. “My passions for education and research come together at the university of applied sciences,” says Finnema. “I’m looking forward to using the Design-Based Education concept and practice-based research to further strengthen the link between education, research and practice. NHL Stenden’s unique combination of being rooted regionally while reaching out internationally offers many opportunities to prepare students for a constantly changing world.”

Carlo Segers

Carlo Segers is currently a member of the executive board at Firda, the recently merged institute for secondary vocational education in Friesland. Prior to that he was chair of the executive board for Friesland College, where he was, amongst other things, responsible for the merger of the Frisian Regional Training Centres (ROCs). He has extensive experience in educational and organisational developments. “NHL Stenden’s appeal for me lies in the innovative approach to education and the strong connection to the region,” says Segers. “Drawing from my experience with organisational development and digitalisation, I will focus strongly on developing future-proof operational affairs that optimally support education and research. I’m looking forward to working with my colleagues on building a university of applied sciences that centres around the students and staff.”

Diligent procedure

The appointments follow a diligent recruitment and selection process that also involved close collaboration with the University Participation Council (HMR). Jaap Sanders, acting chair of the HMR: “The HMR expresses its appreciation for the way in which the Supervisory Board involved us at various stages. The students and staff involved were equal members of the committees and this contributed to a balanced and widely supported decision regarding appointment.

Finally

Marc Otto, chair of the executive board: “I’m enthusiastic about the appointment of Evelyn and Carlo. Their knowledge and experience strengthen our management team and their fresh perspectives and proven board experience will help us further attain our strategic ambitions. I look forward to our collaboration with confidence.”

The new members will join the executive board on 1 July 2025 , bringing the board back to full strength.
