After a long period of opening digitally, NHL Stenden was finally able to physically kick off the academic year on Monday 29 August with Start Academic Year. Speakers Victor Mids and Danny Ghosen challenged students and staff to look at the world from two very different perspectives.

Start Academic Year on campus

For the first time since 2019, NHL Stenden was able to physically kick off the academic year. An excellent opportunity to welcome everyone in an interactive way. Speakers Victor Mids and Danny Ghosen made their audience look at the world in a different way, where there is more to every situation than meets the eye.

Oscar Couwenberg, member of the Executive Board:

"We are very pleased that after two years of starting online we can physically welcome our students and staff again in this new academic year."

The opening day was filled with activities, music and free ice cream on the square.

Science and illusion make you look at things differently

Illusionist Victor Mids took participants into his world of looking at things differently and tricking the mind. He confused students and staff and explained how your brain can be tricked into making certain choices. And that statistics can play a big role in this. He combined illusion and science in a fascinating way and nothing was what it seemed.

Talking about the other world

Journalist and presenter Danny Ghosen talked about a number of impactful situations and stories that he and others have experienced that touch on themes such as culture, racism, drugs and violence. Behind every situation is a different story, and he encouraged his listeners not to follow the stories blindly, but to engage in conversation and get to know the person behind the story.
