Mark Tiele Westra (1971) is Associate Professor of Applied AI within the Computer Vision & Artificial Intelligence professorship at NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences. His areas of expertise include applied AI, machine learning, Large Language Models (LLMs) and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). His research explores what AI means for the way we work and how organisations can use this technology effectively and responsibly.

Within the Applied AI research programme, Mark works with SMEs and other organisations to develop practical applications of AI. His research includes exploring how AI agents and language models can support professionals and how these technologies can be integrated into existing professions and business processes. His focus is not only on what is technically possible, but above all on what works for people. The ethical, social and legal implications of AI are also an important part of his work.

Mark has more than thirty years of experience in software development. He previously worked on World Bank-commissioned machine-learning projects aimed at mapping irrigation systems in Africa. He has also developed data analysis and visualisation tools for international development projects.

Mark holds a PhD in Theoretical Physics from Eindhoven University of Technology and an MSc in Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society. Alongside his role at NHL Stenden, he is a Professor of Practice in Applied AI at Firda. In this role, he connects AI research with vocational education and the regional business community.
