You register and deregister from your studies using Studielink. When deregistering, you need to choose one of two options in Studielink, either Graduating or Deregistering (during your studies or after obtaining your propaedeutic certificate).

Graduating

If you have graduated and selected this as the reason for your deregistration, we will deregister you as of the first of the month following your last study activity. Even if this date is earlier than the date you can choose in Studielink. Your last study activity could be, for instance, your last exam, final assessment or final presentation.

The graduation ceremony is not a study activity, so you do not have to wait for your graduation ceremony to deregister.

If you use DUO products such as a student loan, please make sure to stop those products per the first of the month after deregistration. You can find more info about stopping your student finance here

Deregistering (during your studies or after obtaining your propaedeutic certificate)

If you select Deregistration (during your studies or after obtaining your propaedeutic certificate) in Studielink, you will be deregistered from the first of the following month, or from a later data if you choose this in Studielink. You cannot choose a date in the past as your deregistration date.

You should also submit a deregistration request in Studielink if you are planning to temporarily stop your studies. You should discuss stopping your studies with a student counsellor and your study programme to make sure you are well-informed of the consequences and to make arrangements about returning to your study programme at a later date.

What happens after you submit a deregistration request in Studielink?

After we have received your deregistration request, the Central Student Administration (CSA) will process your request. You will be notified of this by email.

No tuition fees will be refunded in June, July and August. You can deregister in Studielink during these months, but you will not receive a tuition fee refund. Any rights to study grants etc. will end as soon as you deregister. If you are stopping your studies completely and not picking them up again in the next academic year, then you need to select ‘do not re-enrol’ rather than ‘deregister’ in Studielink.

Please note: After you deregister, you will no longer be entitled to study finance and/or your travel product. You are responsible for stopping this through DUO.

Check the instruction of Studielink to learn more about the steps to deregister in Studielink.

Deregistration for non-EU students

When deregistering as a non-EU student with a study residence permit, please be aware that the IND will be informed and that your study residence permit will be revoked. This means that you no longer have a legal residence status and that you will have to leave the Netherlands. Please contact studentinfo@nhlstenden.com if you have any questions.
