I studied Mechanical Engineering at the Universidad San Carlos de Guatemala, followed by a Masters Degree on Sustainable Ship and Shipping 4.0 with dual degrees from the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II in Italy and Universidade da Coruña in Spain. As an engineer I worked in ship design and retrofit in La Spezia, Italy, on pleasure craft and yachts; and before that as an independent mechanical engineer on design. Now I work at NHL Stenden in Leeuwarden as a researcher where I also study a Professional Doctorate on Data Driven Ship Design.

What are your research interests/specialisms?

I enjoy researching technical subjects, the application of new technologies and innovation.  I have a special interest in the applications of software and computer science to engineering problems. I am working towards having an impact on the evolution of ship design, with the goal of contributing to a better path towards sustainability of maritime transport, and more innovative ship designs.

What is your role at NHL Stenden, what are your goals and assignments/projects?

My work is defined by the subject of my Professional Doctorate, Data Driven Ship Design, focusing on the research, design and development of new computational tools for Ship Design, with the inclusion of the new generation of technologies in data science. This work is defined by EU Horizon SEUS, an international research project about the use of software in shipbuilding and ship design.

I participate in the coordination of the Data Science part of the Advanced Engineering Tools for ShipX (AETS) Minor in Leeuwarden, a way to introduce students to the latest tools and techniques for ship design and analysis, allowing them to become better professionals and keep up with the fast changing technological landscape.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I am a musician, I play bass guitar and used to play gigs of cover bands and independent artists. I enjoy Historical European Martial Arts, specially Bolognese swordsmanship. I also enjoy outdoor activities, trekking, kayaking and sailing, anything that includes some adventure in nature.
