What fascinates lector Dr Jan Berenst about practice-based research is, together with teaching staff, making language use and learning open to investigation. In such a way that this produces relevant answers to questions regarding optimal forms of (language) education.

“I studied Dutch Language and Literature at the University of Groningen, and for a number of years worked as a teacher at various schools. Later I became a researcher and lecturer at the University of Groningen for the study programmes Dutch and Communication & Information Sciences. I gave lectures, carried out research and published in the areas of discourse analysislanguage use studies and language & literacy development. I obtained my doctorate in Relational Language Use. I was also closely involved in practice-based research into innovations in language education and the development of learning tools.”

“As lector I am involved in varying degrees in all the research carried out by the Language Use and Learning professorship. The manner in which dialogical language use makes possible and reinforces the interactional learning process lies at the heart of our research. It is fascinating to open this up to research, together with teaching staff, in such a way that for them too it provides relevant answers to questions regarding optimal forms of (language) education. Valorisation, that is to say capitalising on scientific knowledge by making it accessible for third parties, can almost be taken for granted as we carry out our research in Living Labs. The products that we deliver are also partly ‘tools’ for education and evaluation.”
