Jan Martin Muntendam graduated in 1992 as a maritime officer from the Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz. After obtaining his bachelor, he worked for several shipping companies, progressing through the different ranks. He worked as captain from 2000 to 2018, gaining the necessary experience in this period with regard to maritime cybersecurity.

As captain, Jan Martin was also involved in the development of a short internship on board seagoing vessels. For this reason, he was also asked to assist as a skipper/instructor on board of the former training ship, the Octans.
Because of his ice sailing expertise, he was asked to assist the maritime institute in developing the Polar Code ice course.

He made the switch to becoming a full-time lecturer/researcher at the Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz in 2018. In this position, he is involved in the development of education and the development of nautical bridge simulations.
Jan Martin became a member of the Maritime IT Security research group as maritime expert at the beginning of 2022.
