“My Grand Tour experience was wonderful. I learned so much about culture, freedom, life and purpose of life.”
Kyra Bär
Student Leisure and Event Management

This is Kyra, she is 27 years old, originally from Germany and a Leisure and Event management student. She chose to visit two different Grand Tour destinations, South Africa and Bali. In South Africa she did a minor in Change Management and in Bali about Mindful Leadership.

Kyra says that the minors really impacted and changed her life personally and professionally, and this how a typical day of her journey looked like.

“My Grand Tour experience was wonderful. I learned so much about culture, freedom, life and purpose of life. For me, the biggest impact was Bali. The minor is full of inspiration, personal well-being, and personal development. On average I got up at around 08:30 to have breakfast in the hotel (mostly watermelon, eggs and some other fruits), afterwards we got picked up with a minivan to go to class. We always started class with a short meditation and a checking based on our emotions that day. This was followed by a workshop based on topics such as emotional intelligence, empathy, meditation or neuroscience. Everything with the aim to create a mindful leader. Sometimes we had guest lectures to tell even more inspirational stories. After a long day in class, we either spend the rest of the afternoon at the pool or enjoyed some surfing at the beach. All in all, it was a wonderful experience of gaining knowledge in an environment where most people simply spend their holidays.”

“Enjoy the time you have there and take all possibilities of getting to know a different culture!”

exchange student

What Kyra enjoyed most about her Grand Tour experience was the familiar NHL Stenden studying environment like the teaching methods, the testing methods and the structure in general. When going on Grand Tour things like accommodations are organized by the university which is something that Kyra thought is convenient even tough, she would have also liked the challenge of organizing it herself. When thinking about Grand Tour, Kyra thinks of the countless opportunities given to explore different cultures and become even more open-minded. Kyra´s tip for people going on Grand Tour: “Simply enjoy the given opportunity to see the world. Be okay with the restriction that school possibly gives you, cause in the end it does not limit you from any fun, joy or happiness. Enjoy the time you have there and take all possibilities of getting to know a different culture!”

After her Grand Tour time, Kyra is now doing her internship as a mindfulness coach and teacher, something she has learned more about during her semester abroad. She even decided to go full on and formed her own business (@LifeFanatics) based on mindfulness coaching and has her own podcast and blog.
