Bruno Colombo is a researcher within the professorship Water Technology at NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences. His work focuses on emerging contaminants in water, with a particular emphasis on microplastics, nanoplastics, and other difficult-to-detect substances. He is involved in the development of new analytical methods and innovative technologies to identify, monitor, and control these contaminants. In close collaboration with industry partners, research institutions, and public authorities, he contributes to sustainable solutions for water management. In addition, he supervises students and supports their development within the field of water technology.

Born and raised in Brazil, Bruno completed a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry before moving to the Netherlands to pursue a Master's degree in Water Technology. This academic background allowed him to further develop his expertise in the water sector. After completing his studies, he joined the Water Technology Research Group at NHL Stenden, where he has since been involved in practice-oriented research addressing contemporary water challenges.
His research focuses on the detection and control of emerging contaminants in water. This work is particularly important because substances such as micro- and nanoplastics may have harmful effects on ecosystems and human health. By developing new methods for detecting and removing these contaminants, he contributes to cleaner and safer water for both people and the environment.
What he finds most compelling about his work is the multidisciplinary approach required to tackle complex water-related challenges. Chemistry, physical chemistry, and engineering come together to create innovative solutions. He also recognizes the vital role of collaboration in translating research outcomes into practical applications. The societal impact of water research is a major source of motivation for him. Developing technologies that contribute to cleaner water and a more sustainable environment, while working alongside students, researchers, and professionals from diverse backgrounds, is what inspires and energizes him.
