Claudia Sousa

Claudia Sousa is a Project Manager within the professorship Water Technology. She is responsible for the development, coordination, and management of applied research projects, guiding them from the initial idea and funding application through implementation and final reporting. Her work involves close collaboration with researchers, students, industry partners, public organizations, and funding bodies. A key part of her role is connecting people and organizations and creating the conditions that enable research projects to succeed.

Originally from Portugal, she moved to the Netherlands in 2008. She studied Biological Engineering with a specialization in Environmental Technology and later completed her PhD at Wetsus, where she investigated the influence of oxygen on microalgae cultivation. Over the years, Claudia has held a variety of positions within the water technology sector, including roles at Wetsus, Isle Utilities, and Berghof Membranes. Since 2022, she has been part of the professorship Water Technology at NHL Stenden, combining her scientific background with project management and research coordination.

Although her current role focuses primarily on project management, she remains closely involved in the scientific and technical aspects of research. The projects she coordinates cover topics such as water reuse, resource recovery, treatment technologies, microplastics, digitalisation, and innovative solutions for water and agriculture. What motivates her most is the combination of technology, collaboration, and societal impact. Claudia enjoys bringing together different perspectives and seeing innovative ideas develop into practical projects with real-world value. Her ambition is to strengthen collaboration between education, research, and industry and to support the development of sustainable innovations while further enhancing NHL Stenden’s position as a trusted partner in applied research and innovation.
